David McCallum was a Physical Education teacher who after purchasing his first home discovered his love for building and renovating. He decided to return to study and become a registered builder before starting his own business, DDB Designs, in 1991. Working alongside his wife who is an Interior Designer the business was small but successful and was able to provide his family a good life. David had no real ‘dream’ for the business, he just did what was logical to him and in line with his love and passion for building, he just “wanted to be proud of what he built”.
David wasn’t proactive with his marketing or conscious of his brand and website which he attributes to the business struggles that he encountered in 2015. David said “The Business was losing dollars and I was down in the dumps”; he almost shut down the business but his wife encouraged him to connect with a business coach. David found Outcomes Business Group through a google search and felt an affinity with David Guest’s videos, noting that he was a good communicator, a quick phone call determined that this relationship was a natural fit.
Two days after meeting with David Guest, he attended a 90 Day Planning Workshop where he spent the whole day immersed in the culture of Outcomes Business Group and their clients. It provided him with the structure, focus and motivation he needed both professionally and personally.
Since beginning coaching sessions the changes David has made to DDB Designs are endless, one of the biggest changes for David is his website which had aged and had no content, he now has a new website where he writes and publishes content that’s helpful for his clients. He says he is “More mindful of what I’m doing in terms of working on the business” and has improved his time management skills immensely, previously he had no time out and worked 100% of his time in the business, he now aims to reduce this to only work 50% of the time in the business and the other time writing and systemizing.
His coaching sessions are focused on culture, structure and growth which has influenced the way he interacts with his staff, sustainable growth cannot happen unless each team member is playing their role within the business, so David mentors his staff by placing focus on culture and values and doesn’t push for productivity, instead he guides his team using communication and systems.
David admits that he has found it difficult to turn his business around; however, in the last couple of months he has starting to see growth and sees potential for significant growth (around 30%) for the second half of 2017 and first half of 2018.
David says that by having David Guest as his Business Coach, he always has a list of tasks to complete and is held accountable for those, he says that “Knowledge is easy to get but putting it into action is the hard part…and that’s exactly why you need a coach.”
Outcomes Business Group runs a 90 Day Planning Workshop 4 times a year. David always clears his schedule to ensure he can attend. This workshop helps to map out a winning game plan for the next 90 days with attendees leaving with energy, vision and focus for the next 90 days. David mentioned that at the last workshop he had the opportunity to discuss the benefits of coaching to some fellow attendees and discussed that he believes that “every business needs a coach”.
David says the highlight of his Outcomes Business Group coaching experience is the changes in his mindset. He had a fear of the unknown and didn’t know what needed to be done within his business, he is now very positive and focused, he has direction and knows exactly where he needs to be and how to get there. Over the next 3 years David aims to continue to focus on getting the structure and culture of his business right, creating platforms for growth. He aims to step back from the day-to-day running of the business and appreciates that coaching has given him both the know-how and the confidence to do just that.
